FELIPE CABRERA
Born 15 August 1961 Havana, Cuba
Studies At the age of 12, Felipe Cabrera began studying Music Theory with a private professor in order to prepare his entry into the Amadeo Roldan School of Music. He was accepted at the young age of 13 and there studied the bassoon for seven years.
Finishing The Amadeo Roldan Scool of Music at the age of 20, he was then accepted to the Instituto Superior de Arte where he continued to study the bassoon from 20-25. At the same time, Felipe Cabrera was part of the Orchesta Symphonica Nacional de Cuba. He played with the Orchestra while studying at the ISA, until he was approached by Gonzalo Rubalcaba - who saw him play live in 1984 at the Havana Jazz Plaza Festival - to form the `Grupo ProyectoŽ with him. At that moment, Felipe Cabrera's instrument changed and he became a bass player. That was 13 years ago, debuting with the first concert held at the Havana Cultural Center at 30 June 1984.
International Acclaim
Needless to say, the `Grupo ProyectoŽ became very well known and were invited to all of the best known jazz festivals worldwide. Their first overseas festival was an invitation to the North Sea Jazz Festival in June 1985. Since that time, Felipe Cabrera has played at the most important Jazz festivals worldwide.
Not only that, he has shared the stage with some of the most famous Jazz musicians of our time such as Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, George Benson, Jeff Gardner...
